The Ariel Ensemble

Performing extensively in Northern California under the Chamber Music Society of Sacramento, the Ariel Ensemble has received many local awards and grants.The ensemble recently won the highest commissioning grant from Chamber Music America. Their recording of “Jazz Quartet” by Meyer Kupferman received a rave review by Fanfare magazine. Bay Area performances include Midsummer Mozart series, Other Minds Festival, Noontime Concerts, Music on the Hill series, the Tahoe Chamber Music Society series, the Music Now series, and Wet Ink. For Music on the Hill, they will be performing a concert of Russian music by Glière, Shostakovich, Borodin and Rubtsov.

Performers are William Barbini and Kineko Okumura, violins; Paul Ehrlich, viola; Victoria Ehrlich, cello; Mathew Krejci, flute.

"Paris Nights"

A concert of jazz-inspired French music for piano, violin, clarinet, and saxophone.The composers of post-WWI Paris were irresistibly drawn to American Jazz. The confluence of impressionism, cabaret, and jazz left its mark on French music throughout the 20^th century. “Paris Nights” takes us back to those early years of smoke-filled cafes and bawdy cabarets. Violinist Eline van den Ende performs regularly with Symphony Silicon Valley. She and Geordie Frazer have played with the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet and Opera orchestras.In addition to his career in classical music, Geordie is an accomplished jazz musician who has performed with artists such as Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole,Smokey Robinson, and Tony Bennett. As a Trio, the group has performed in salon concerts since 2014. Will be performing works by Poulenc, Ravel, Ibert, and Eychenne.

Performers are Eline van den Ende, violin; Geordie Frazer, saxophone/clarinet; Ava Soifer, piano.

Strobe

Newly formed in 2015, Strobe presents music arranged and written for oboe and strings. The ensemble includes seasoned musicians who perform regularly in major orchestras in the Bay Area. Their mission is to create an expanded repertoire for this unusual ensemble by commissioning new works by living composers. This concert features the first newly-commissioned quartet for Strobe by the American composer Vincent Russo, who has written works for orchestra and chamber ensembles, as well as for television and film. Performing Mozart’s Divertimento; String Trio by Kodaly; Gordon Jacobs’ Oboe Quartet; and a newly-commissioned work by American composer, Vincent Russo.

Performers are Laura Griffiths, oboe; Stephanie Bibbo, violin; Caroline Lee, viola; and Krisanthy Desby, cello.

Thalea String Quartet

Formed in 2014 at the Zephyr International Chamber Festival, the Thalea String Quartet has been praised for their ”vibrant performance” and “sincere expressivity” (SF Classical Voice). The quartet has performed recitals in Italy, France, the United States, and Canada. And it was recently appointed the first quartet in residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. They made their debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in early 2016 and were named one of the “Top 10 Bay Area Quartets You Should Know” by CultureTrip.com. The Quartet has been featured on KDFC’s “The State of the Arts” and have performed on the KALW program “Revolutions per Minute,” hosted by pianist Sarah Cahill. They will be performing: Mozart: String Quartet in A major K 169; Cowell: String Quartet No 4 "United"; and Beethoven: String Quartet op 130, Grosse Fugue op. 133.
